We’ve all heard the old cliché a thousand times: “It’s about the journey, not the destination.” Most of the time, we nod, smile, and secretly just want to get to where we’re going. But our recent road trip proved that the old saying can be brutally, beautifully accurate.
Our first destination was Bella Coola which required 2 overnights on the way. But while our stays at Pyper Lake and One Eye Lake were absolutely wonderful, our actual visit to Bella Coola? Let’s just say it didn’t quite live up to the hype.
Fortunately, the magic of the open road more than made up for it.
You go into a wild, rustic campsite expecting a few things: crisp air, quiet nights, and maybe a bit of roughing it. You don’t expect to find a scene straight out of a storybook! You wouldn’t exactly expect to see Trumpeter swans and horses hanging around a wild campsite, but Pyper Lake had both! Watching the horses graze against the rugged backdrop while swans glided across the water felt like stumbling into a private paradise. It was the perfect reminder of why we love getting off the beaten path.

We awoke to a beautiful, sunny day. The energy was high, the coffee was hot, and we set out with high spirits to head down the highway toward Bella Coola. The road had one more massive highlight in store for us.
Along the way, we suddenly spotted a flash of dark fur. A gorgeous bear was sauntering casually across the road right ahead of us. She didn’t seem panicked or rushed at all. Instead, she wandered over to the shoulder and stood by the side of the road to watch us, almost posing, as we carefully slowed down to take her picture.

It was one of those breathtaking, quiet moments where time stands still, and you realize just how lucky you are to be sharing space with BC’s incredible wildlife.
Eventually, we made it to Bella Coola. And while the drive there was packed with postcard-perfect moments, wild surprises, and pristine lakes, the destination itself just didn’t mirror the magic of the road. Our visit there was a bit of a letdown.
But you know what? That’s the beauty of a road trip. When you focus entirely on the endpoint, a lackluster destination can ruin a vacation. But when you embrace the campsites, the morning sun, the swans, and the bears along the way, the trip is always a massive success.
Bella Coola might not have been our favorite stop, but the journey to get there is something we’ll never forget.
More to come!
Love the photos of the horses and bear, glad to hear you are enjoying your trip so far. Looking forward to following your journey!
